Escape the hustle-bustle of city life on this relaxing overnight cruise that takes you deep inside one of the most spectacular regions in New Zealand – Doubtful Sound.
Doubtful Sound, located in the World Heritage area of Fiordland, is an overwhelming place. Feel the awesome power of Nature here - the remoteness, the wilderness and the peace. Doubtful Sound is also the second largest of the 14 fjords in Fiordland National Park and is three times longer and 10 times larger than Milford Sound. Towering peaks, several outstanding waterfalls and fiords clad with ancient vegetation create a powerful atmosphere of solitude and serenity.
Catch a glimpse of bottlenose dolphins as they frequently come alongside the vessel, fur seals basking on the rocks around the fiord and rare penguins.
Day 1: Queenstown – Cruise on Lake Manapouri – Cruise aboard Fiordland Navigator in Doubtful Sound
You will be picked up from your hotel in Queenstown in an air-conditioned coach and taken to Manapouri. This journey takes approximately 2 hours 45 minutes. On arriving at Manapouri, you will be transferred to a cruise vessel for a short cruise across island-studded Lake Manapouri to West Arm.
At West Arm, board a coach once again and travel on the remote sub-alpine route over Wilmot Pass. There are opportunities along the way to experience some of Fiordland's densest rainforest, spectacular scenery and to view the colorful alpine moss gardens.
Arrive at Deep Cove in Doubtful Sound and board the Fiordland Navigator. The Fiordland Navigator is purpose built for cruising in the fiords and offers spacious viewing decks, a comfortable dining saloon/fully licensed bar and observation lounge. You have the choice of private cabins with ensuite bathrooms or shared bunk-style accommodation.
(Please Note: It is recommended that you order lunch on Day 1. It should be pre-booked for collection at Manapouri before boarding the vessel).
Comprehensive commentary on board the cruise vessel will help you appreciate the significance of Doubtful Sound and its stunning landscape. Interpretation handouts are also available in English, French, German, Spanish and Japanese.
There is plenty of time on your overnight cruise to soak up the stunning surrounds and to discover the hidden arms of Doubtful Sound – Hall, Crooked and First. Bottlenose dolphins often ride the vessel’s bow waves, fur seals bask on the rocks and, at times, rare penguins make an appearance.
The cruise ship will anchor at a chosen mooring for the night giving you the opportunity to kayak around the shoreline, go exploring in the tender craft with the ship’s nature guide or simply relax on deck.
A sumptuous three-course buffet will be served in the evening showcasing some of the region’s finest produce.
Overnight aboard the Fiordland Navigator.
Day 2: Depart Doubtful Sound - Arrive in Queenstown
After a delicious breakfast cooked fresh for you on board the ship, you will cruise towards Deep Cove. Disembark and re-board your coach and depart Queenstown via Manapouri.
