The Southern Alps aren’t as polite as the ones in the northern hemisphere; they have a Mt. Hooker. They also have the infamous Fox Glacier that you SHALL cross to appreciate fully the literal translation of walking on ice. Ever thought of traipsing through a glacier tunnel? There are loads of options here, starting from Franz Josef to Fox. For a completely extraordinary experience, take the supposedly sedate bus drive from Christchurch to Greymouth. You travel in one day from a picturesque coast to a glacial region at breakneck speed. The public bus driver also doubles as a paperboy, hurling tightly wound newspapers at passing driveways. You can stop enroute at Arthur’s Pass to send postcards home. If you ever dreamt of eating Possum Pie, the place to do it in would be Bushman’s Retreat on the Highway lodge. West from Harihari to Ross, the lodge is strange and extravagant. As they bake your pie, enjoy your coffee sitting on fur-decorated chairs.
