For your High Country Adventure Tour you will be picked up from your Christchurch hotel and taken to the railway station to board the world-famous TranzAlpine Train.
Relax and enjoy the 2½ hour train journey. Watch the landscape change from the flat, open farmland of the Canterbury Plains to the rolling foothills of the Southern Alps. Travel alongside rushing rivers, cross spectacular gorges, and enjoy the rugged beauty of the high country.
Brown tussock grasslands give way to lush rainforest and soaring mountains as you approach Arthur’s Pass, the highest altitude settlement in New Zealand (737 metres). At Arthur’s Pass you leave the train and will be met by a driver/guide with a specially designed 4WD vehicle (‘tussock buggy’).
Travel westward to the magnificent Otira Gorge. Here you can overlook one of New Zealand’s greatest engineering marvels, the elegant Otira Viaduct, before travelling back through the Arthur’s Pass National Park to Flock Hill Station.
At Flock Hill you will be served a sumptuous three-course lunch in the Garden Restaurant. Relax, enjoy your food, take in the refreshing mountain air, and gaze at the picturesque surroundings.
After lunch, set off on a 20 km safari through Flock Hill Sheep Station, a vast 35,000 acre property. Frequent stops are made for photos and to allow you the chance to experience first-hand the spectacular beauty and remoteness of this rugged landscape.
Your guides will tell you about the local history and farming practices of the area as you travel along part of the original stage coach route, hand-built by the early Canterbury pioneers 100 years ago to gain access to the gold fields of the West Coast. The final stage of your ‘tussock buggy’ adventure will be the thrilling descent of ‘Pig Gully’, into the Waimakariri River Gorge several hundred metres below.
It is now time to board a large all-weather Hamilton jet boat for a scenic river journey down the spectacular Waimakariri River Gorge, stopping off at historic river locations and secluded fishing spots. Experience the thrill of skimming over water – at times only centimetres deep – before arriving at Woodstock Station.
At Woodstock Station, you will enjoy afternoon tea overlooking the Waimakariri River. Then board a coach for the final stage of your adventure along a private road built by Sir Bill Hamilton, inventor of the jet boat. You continue over the 10,000 acre Woodstock Station and then travel through the Oxford area as you cross the Canterbury Plains on the return journey to Christchurch. Back in the city, you will be dropped off at your accommodation.
