Overview

Visit a Mengkak longhouse which is a typical Malaysian house built on stilts and shared by families and meet native Iban people, original inhabitants of the island.

Day 1

Today depart from Kuching to Batang Ai, approximately 166 miles from Kuching city, passing through scenic countryside dotted with villages, paddy fields, pepper and oil palm plantations. Enjoy lunch at Lachau town before arriving at Batang Ai Hydro Lake. Embark on a 40-minute motorised longboat to Mengkak longhouse.

Arriving at Mengkak longhouse, visit the ‘entire village under one roof’. After dinner, return to the main part of the longhouse for some entertainment, including traditional dancing, music and a glass or two of tuak (rice wine) with the longhouse dwellers. The Ibans are a fun-loving people and visitors are expected to join in. Today lunch and dinner will be included.

Day 2

Start your day with a sumptuous breakfast and then get ready to enjoy the calming activity for the day. Wake to the soothing sounds of the jungle chorus and try your hand at the blow pipe demonstration. Then, depart for Kuching and enjoy lunch en-route.
