The tour starts from the Achille Lauro Parking Area in Sorrento at 0810h (8.10am). Accompanied by a guide you will travel along a beautiful coastal road through Castellammare di Stabia and join the highway to Herculaneum.
Herculaneum was buried by a river of volcanic mud in 79 AD when Mount Vesuvius erupted. A residential Roman fishing and port town, it was rediscovered in 1709.
Take a guided tour of Herculaneum and see well preserved buildings like the House of the Argus, which probably belonged to a Roman noble, judging from its porticoed courtyard and dining area. Continue to the public baths which are among the best preserved Roman baths in Europe and see deep pools, stucco friezes and bas reliefs. The House of Neptune and Amphitrite has a beautiful mosaic as well as a portrait of the owners of the household.
You will also have free time to walk around this ancient city at leisure before setting out for Pompeii.
Pompeii is one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was buried under lava and ash from Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and lay forgotten for hundreds of years. Excavations began in the 18th century and are still being carried out. Your guide will take you along the ancient streets of Pompeii for a glimpse into the lives of the Romans.
You will visit many of the best-preserved Roman structures in the ancient city, such as the
Anfiteatro, which is the oldest known Roman amphitheatre in the world and was capable of holding up to 20,000 spectators or the Villa dei Misteri, which is adorned with the beautiful fresco Dionysiac Frieze.
After your guided tour you will return to Sorrento. You will be dropped at the Achille Lauro Parking Area at around 1615h (4.15pm).
