Explore the beauty of the Toraja Highlands in the south of Sulawesi. Learn about the strange burial customs of the Torajans on your trip to Lemo. You will see a cliff displaying ancestral sculptures and hanging graves. The most intriguing are the royal tombs which have long balconies carved on the rock, with wooden dolls (called tau tau) dressed in similar clothes as the deceased.

Another popular tourist landmark in Toraja is Londa village known for its ceremonial burial place. Interestingly, most Torajan houses have big boat shaped roofs facing north. At the quaint village of Pallawa, look out for Tongkonan houses with traditional architecture, rice barns and granaries. This four-day tour of Sulawesi will truly be a time to remember.

Itinerary

Day 1: Makassar - Toraja

You will be picked up at 0800h (08:00am) in a car from the Hasanuddin airport in Makassar and taken on a guided tour of Toraja. Set out on a scenic drive along the coast to Pare Pare, where you will break for lunch, and then turn inland and up the mountains. Stop for coffee at Puncak Lakawang and enjoy a panoramic view of the landscape. Late in the afternoon, you will arrive at Toraja.

Day 2: Toraja

After breakfast, set out on a full-day exploration of Toraja Highlands. Visit Lemo to see the cliff displaying ancestral sculptures and hanging graves. Proceed to Londa which has an ancient ceremonial burial place. Continue to Ketu Kesu, a beautiful village in Toraja and see Tongkonan houses and rice barns. It is famous for its woodcarvings. Here, you have a break for lunch at a local restaurant in Rantepao.

Day 3: Toraja

After breakfast, set out for Batutumonga and enjoy superb views over Rantepao and surrounding valleys. Further on, visit Pallawa, a village on a small hill with many Tongkonan houses, rice barns and granaries. Proceed to Sa’dan, a weaving centre. Enjoy traditional lunch at a local restaurant in Rantepao.

Day 4: Toraja

After early breakfast, you will be transferred back to Makassar. Lunch will be provided en route in Pare Pare. Afterwards, proceed directly to the airport for your onward flight.
