Overview

Visit one of India’s most famous bird sanctuaries, the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, also called the Keoladeo Ghana National Park and spot many exotic species of birds. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to over 300 species of birds and a popular stop-over point for migratory birds like the Siberian Crane. You could also spot Saras cranes, cormorants and kingfishers that inhabit this beautiful landscape. In winters (October to March), the sanctuary is particularly attractive to visitors because of the large number of migratory birds that are present at the time.

Bharatpur was once a semi-arid region which would only fill with water in the monsoon months and remain dry for the rest of the year. The Maharaja of Bharatpur, to create a good shooting range, diverted water from a nearby irrigation canal to the park and created what is today India’s most famous bird sanctuary. It used to be a favourite hunting ground for the British viceroys before it became the Keoladeo Ghana National Park.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see the Siberian Crane. Pre-book your tour to this beautiful bird sanctuary to avoid disappointment.

Itinerary

Day 1:

You will be picked up from your hotel in Jaipur and travel to Bharatpur, about 255 kilometres away, in an air-conditioned vehicle to visit the Keoladeo Ghana National Park.

Upon arrival in Bhartapur, check into The Udaivilas Hotel (standard room). The hotel is very close to the park and has air-conditioned rooms, a swimming pool, gymnasium, a bar and a multi-cuisine restaurant where you can enjoy local Rajasthani cuisine apart from Mughlai, Continental and Chinese food. Your package includes breakfast daily, throughout your stay.

Day 2:
After breakfast, accompanied by a local English-speaking nature guide, proceed to the National Park which is home to more than 300 species of exotic birds. As a conservation measure, you are permitted to tour the park only in a cycle rickshaw (which seats two people comfortably), which adds to the uniqueness and charm of the entire experience. You will return to the hotel for lunch at a suitable time (payable direct).

After lunch, you will go on another excursion into the park. Enjoy the beauty of the park from the comfort of your rickshaw. A large portion of the park lies under water, the extent and volume depending on the intensity of the rains. The remaining areas are covered with dry deciduous forests (with Acacia, Ber, Kadam and Khajur trees) and extensive grasslands. Often, when the rains have been inadequate and the volume of water is rather low, the number of birds in the park too is rather low.

Many consider the park one of Asia’s finest birding areas with species including the demoiselle and the rare Siberian Cranes. It is also an excellent place to watch mammals like Golden Jackal, Striped Hyena, Fishing Cat, Jungle Cat, Nilgai, Sambar, Blackbuck and wild Boar. Learn more about the eating habits and the migratory patterns of the birds from your nature guide.

After a tour of the park, return to the hotel for dinner (payable direct) and spend the night there.

Day 3:
Today you will leave Bharatpur for Jaipur. You will be dropped to your hotel in Jaipur where the tour concludes.
