Overview

Located 40 Kilometres from Agra, Fatehpur Sikri was built by Emperor Akbar in 1569 in honour of the great Saint Sheikh Salim Chisti who blessed Akbar and prophesied the birth of three sons to the heirless Emperor. Akbar used Fatehpur Sikri as his capital for 14 years but the city was later abandoned primarily because of scarcity of water.

Visit the remarkably well-preserved, graceful buildings within the 'Ghost City' including the Jama Masjid, the tomb of Salim Chisti, Panch Mahal Palace and other palaces that speak volumes of the grandeur and splendour of the Mughal empire at the height of its power. Don't miss the Bulund Darwaza which is 40 metres high and was built by Akbar to commemorate his victory in the state of Gujarat.

Jama Masjid: The mosque built by Akbar. Appreciate the row of chattris (small, domed pavillions). Don't miss the Bulund Darwaza, a 40-metre high, domed archway that Akbar built to commemorate his victory in the state of Gujarat. Built of red sandstone with inscriptions from the Koran on it, it is an iconic symbol of Fatehpur Sikri.

The tomb of Salim Chisti: Built of white marble within the courtyard of the Jama Masjid, the tomb attracts people of all faiths.

Panch Mahal Palace: A five-storeyed palace with intricately carved pillars.
