Overview

Lying at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula, Cape Sounion is one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in Greece. The Cape rises high above the serene Aegean Sea and was an important nautical look-out point in ancient times.

The Cape is renowned for the ruins of the ancient Temple of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea in classical mythology. The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea and offer one of the most picture-perfect sunsets in Greece.

Enjoy a scenic drive to the Temple, and time at leisure to explore the area.

Itinerary

An English-speaking guide will accompany you on this tour.

The drive to Cape Sounion takes about one hour and follows a scenic route along the Apollo Coast. The scenic coastal road offers a splendid view of the Saronic Gulf, passing through some of Athens most beautiful suburbs such as Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza to Cape Sounion. The rock face at Cape Sounion has a breathtaking, sheer 197 foot drop to the sea.

Visit the 5th century B.C.Temple of Poseidon, the main attraction of the Cape. The serene, imposing edifice offers spectacular views of the shimmering Aegean Sea. Though the statue of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea is long gone, his presence is still felt by the people who watch for the return of their loved ones from the sea.

After the visit to the temple, explore Cape Sounion at leisure.
