From Dunsborough, a 13 km (7.8 miles) scenic drive brings you to the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and Maritime Museum. Activated in 1904 and situated on a rugged promontory, the 20 meter tall lighthouse is surrounded by a rich array of interesting flora and fauna. A climb to the top offers breath-taking 360 degree views across the Indian Ocean, Cape Naturaliste, Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park and the beautiful Geographe Bay.
A friendly tour guide will show you the lighthouse and tell you some of the fascinating stories surrounding it. Learn about the shipwrecks on this dangerous coastline, the difficulties of constructing a lighthouse in such a remote place, the explosion in 1907, the jar of valuable mercury that went missing and the lonely lives of the lighthouse keepers. You’ll also hear some spine-chilling ghost stories!
The 30-minute walking tour is in English, but translations of the tour information into most European languages are available on site. The fascinating maritime museum provides stories and pictures of the past; and also offers refreshments and souvenirs (payable direct).
Numerous walking trails lead from the Lighthouse around the stunning bays and beaches of the Cape, providing amazing views over the ocean and of the local seasonal wildflowers. A platform and shelter provides magnificent whale watching during the annual migratory periods, from August to December.
Your tour ends at the lighthouse and you need to make your own arrangements for returning to Margaret River township.
