Travel back in time to Tasmania’s convict history as you visit Richmond and Port Arthur. With only a 100 metre wide strip of land joining Port Arthur to the mainland, it was an ideal location to imprison people. Prisoners were trapped on all sides by the ocean with ‘Eaglehawk Neck’ their only access to freedom. Built on convict labour, Port Arthur stands testimony to a time gone by. See the buildings and bridges built by convicts and the prisons where they were incarcerated as you listen to your guide tell you more about the place.

Add a dash of natural wonder to this tour as you enjoy a cruise in Port Harbour and view fascinating formations like the ‘tessellated pavement’ and ‘Devil’s Kitchen’.

This tour will give you a deeper understanding of Australia’s history.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel in Hobart and will travel in an air-conditioned vehicle, accompanied by a guide, on this sightseeing tour. You will cross landmarks like Salamanca Place which is Hobart’s famous hang-out place with shops and cafés, Constitution Dock and Battery Point before heading across the Tasman Bridge to the Tasman Peninsula. On the way, stop and see the ‘tessellated pavement’ which is a unique rock formation that appears on shores. See other natural attractions along the peninsula's rugged coast such as Devil’s Kitchen. Continue to Port Arthur which is a former convict settlement. It was created to put fear and hatred into the minds of those unfortunate enough to be sent there. After a light lunch, your guide will take you around the ruins narrating stories associated with the place and the people who were captive there. There are about 30 buildings here which were once prisons, hospitals, churches or offices.

After this tour of Port Arthur, you will be taken to the dock for a short cruise around the harbour in a modern catamaran. The duration of the cruise is about 20 minutes.

After the cruise, you will board your vehicle and travel to the historic convict village of Richmond. It is popular with locals and tourists alike who like to visit its convict jail, the bridge built by convicts and shop at various craft shops. You can visit Australia’s oldest Catholic church here and take a stroll around the village. Then board your vehicle and return to your hotel in Hobart where the tour ends.
