For your Kuranda, Tablelands & Skybury Coffee Tour from Cairns you will be picked up from your hotel and will spend a glorious day touring the naturally air-conditioned Atherton Tablelands. There are two options for the trip: one takes you back to Cairns at the end of the day on the Skyrail over the rainforest and the other takes you back to Cairns in a coach.
When hotel pick-up is complete you will take a picturesque ride on the Kuranda Scenic Rail. This railway is a magnificent feat of engineering and was built in the 1890s in response to desperate pleas from tin miners at Herberton who were agitating for a rail link to the coast to bring them supplies. As you look out at the stupendous views, reflect that much of this incredible railway was constructed not with bulldozers, jackhammers and other modern equipment, but with strategy, fortitude, hand tools, dynamite, buckets and bare hands.
You will travel to Kuranda Village, a quaint township in the rainforest which is famous for its arts, crafts and Aboriginal artifacts.
Beyond Kuranda you will explore the amazing Tablelands, an elevated plateau of diverse beauty, contrasting scenery and fertile farmlands.
You will visit Skybury Coffee Centre, which is North Queensland’s oldest and largest coffee plantation. Here you’ll enjoy a fascinating tour of the plantation and learn all about coffee growing. You'll also experience Coffee Cupping, where the guide shows you how to sip coffee to ensure you get the full flavour and aroma – similar to wine tasting but with coffee!
Enjoy a delicious two-course lunch in the Plantation Restaurant (fully licensed) set against beautiful surroundings with native gardens and panoramic views of the Tablelands.
In the afternoon visit Granite Gorge where volcanic activity has pushed up huge granite boulders. This breathtaking wilderness is home to many native animals including the Mareeba Rock Wallaby.
If you wish, you will have time to take a quick dip in one of the various swimming holes created by Granite Creek. You may also take some time to feed the wallabies or a walk through the stone wilderness.
Then return to Kuranda and board a Skyrail gondola for a 7.5 km journey over the top of the rainforest back to Cairns. As you glide just metres above the tops of the trees in a comfortable six-person gondola cabin, your Skyrail experience will reveal one of the most botanically fascinating and diverse areas on earth.
If you choose the option that doesn’t include the Skyrail then you will board a comfortable coach for the return to Cairns. You will stop on the way to admire the views from the Henry Ross Lookout.
Whichever option you have chosen, you will be dropped back at your Cairns or Northern Beaches hotel at the end of the trip.
