Overview

Discover the Jewish history of Amsterdam with this super saver ticket that gives you access to the most important landmarks in the Jewish Cultural Quarter - Jewish Historical Museum, Portuguese Synagogue, Children's Museum, National Holocaust Memorial (Hollandse Schouwburg) and Holocaust Museum. Set across a compact square kilometer, the area is teeming with historical and cultural artefacts, making for an extremely fruitful day out in Amsterdam.

Presenting an explicit picture of Jewish history in the Netherlands, the Jewish Historical Museum is breathtaking to say the least. Spread across four majestic synagogues, it is an excellent site to dig deep into Jewish culture and a history that stretches across hundreds of years; with a collection that features everything from paintings and films to 3D presentations to utensils. The Children’s Museum, part of the Historical Museum, is great for kids and young people as a lesson on a different culture - the museum is set up like the homes of typical Jewish families and gets one up close with the daily life of the Hollanders, accompanied by your entertaining companion Max the Matzo as he guides you across the three floors.

The spectacular 17th century Portuguese Synagogue or the Esnoga stands right across the Museum - a stunning Sephardic synagogue which belonged to one of the wealthiest Jewish communities of Amsterdam and is still active to this day. Although it has an unassuming facade, the interiors are simply marvellous and it is also home to one of the oldest Jewish libraries in the world, Ets Haim.

Equally mesmerising is the National Holocaust Museum, housing a collection of exhibitions, events, artefacts and personal artefacts to get you acquainted with the stories of the Holocaust in Amsterdam. While still under construction, it does an exceptional job of presenting the harrowing Dutch Holocaust in an international context. And then of course there is the Hollandsche Schouwburg or the National Holocaust Memorial, a museum which has experienced a varied range of historic uses. From being a Dutch theatre to being a Jewish one top being the deportation centre for Jews being taken to the concentration camps, the building has seen it all and now houses a memorial room as well as a monument to pay homage to the victims of this tragedy.
