Overview

Take a trip to the seven thousand year old Karnak Temples in Luxor – one of the largest temple complexes in history. See the Luxor temple, dedicated to the god Amon Ra, built in the time of Amenhotep II and Ramesses II and learn about religion in ancient Egypt. At the entrance to this temple are two huge statues of the king sitting on his throne. Two obelisks flanked the approach to the temple although one of them now stands at the Concorde Square in Paris.

This tour will also take you to the wonderful Valley of the Kings; where tombs were built for the Pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. Most of the tombs follow a similar pattern of architecture - three corridors, an antechamber and a sunken sarcophagus chamber.

Itinerary

You will be picked up in an air-conditioned vehicle from your hotel in Hurghada. Accompanied by a guide, you will be taken to the city of Luxor in Upper Egypt. It will take you about 3 hours to reach Luxor from Hurghada. You will visit the following sites:

Karnak Temples: It is the largest temple complex ever built by man, and represents the combined achievement of many generations of ancient builders. The Temple of Karnak is actually three main temples, smaller enclosed temples and several outer temples, located about 3 kilometres north of Luxor. This vast complex was built and enlarged over a 1300 year period. The 3 main temples of Mut, Montu and Amun are enclosed by enormous brick walls.

Luxor Temple: It was constructed for the worship of god Amon Ra whose marriage anniversary to his wife (Mut) was celebrated once a year. The construction of the temple dates from Amenhotep II and Ramesses II. The entrance of the temple is a huge pylon constructed by Ramesses II. It has two huge statues representing the king seated.

Valley of the Kings or Wadi el-Muluk: It is a valley in Egypt where tombs were built for the Pharaoh and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom. The valley stands on the west bank of the Nile and consists of two valleys, East and West, with the majority of the royal tombs situated in the East Valley.

Temple of Queen Hatshepsut: Also known as ‘Dier El Bahari’, it was established by Queen Hatshepsut, the only woman who ruled Egypt in the Pharaonic history. As you approach it from the distance, it is as of you are looking at a modern building that has been carved out of a mountain. Dier El-Bahari was commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut as a funerary monument to honour her father, Tutmose I and herself.

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant. After sightseeing in Luxor, you will be dropped back to your hotel in Hurghada.
