The Taj Mahal is a remarkable example of Mughal architecture blended with Persian and Indian elements. The patterned walkways, decorated archways, carved motifs and the ornate marble screens are impressive.
The Agra Fort also promises rare historical insights with its mosques and palaces that once housed the Mughals. The extravagance of the erstwhile emperors is reflected in the glittering Sheesh Mahal (hall of mirrors), the grand Moti Masjid,, the Khas Mahal (Special Palace) and other noteworthy monuments inside the fort.
Any visitor to India would not like to miss this opportunity to see the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort.
At Delhi, board the Shatabdi Express to reach Agra in the morning (Train ticket included. Tentative train timings: 0615h/ 0800h (6:15am/ 8:00am). You will travel in an air-conditioned chair car. Upon arrival at Agra, you will be picked up from the railway station and proceed on your sightseeing tour in an air-conditioned private vehicle accompanied by an English-speaking guide.
Agra, situated by the river Yamuna, was the seat of three Mughal Emperors including Shah Jehan. Arguably one of India’s most visited destinations, it attracts visitors from across the world because of the Taj Mahal. While in Agra, visit:
• The Taj Mahal: This is a symbol of eternal love and an enduring icon of India. This mausoleum of white marble was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan in the memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Considered one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture, the Taj Mahal was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
• The Agra Fort: A massive red-sandstone monument built by the Mughals. There are a number of mosques and palaces inside the fort which are impressive examples of Mughal architecture. See the Diwan-i-Aam (The Hall of Public Audiences) where Shah Jehan met officials and commoners and listened to the petitioners. Don’t miss the Musamman Burj where Shah Jehan spent his last later years as a captive of his son, gazing at the Taj Mahal. Also see the Macchi Bhavan, the Jahangiri Mahal, and other notable monuments inside the fort complex.
In the evening, you will be taken to the railway station in time to board the Shatabdi Express to return to Delhi (Tentative train timings: 2030h/ 2230h (8:30pm/10:30pm).
