Our tips for Kangaroo Island

  • A visit to Kangaroo Island can be quite expensive, so consider spending at lease 3-4 nights there to ensure that you get value for money.
  • Petrol on Kangaroo Island is very expensive! So make sure that you fill up your tank before you leave the mainland. And fuel on the island can be found only in a few select localities, so make sure you come prepared.
  • Try to stock up on food and groceries on the mainland itself as shops are few and the prices are inflated. However, the 2 places where you can buy your groceries are Kingscote and Penneshaw.

Good to know

Best time to visit

Kangaroo Island can be visited throughout the year as the weather is mild and pleasant. But the best time to visit is during the spring season between September and November. June, July and August are also a perfect time to visit if you want to avoid the crowds.

Getting there

You can rent a car and drive to the island or opt for guided Kangaroo Island coach tours that include roundtrip transfers in the package. The island is a 30-minute plane ride from Adelaide. There are also seasonal flights from Melbourne to the island.

Money saving tips

A great way to save money is by booking your trip for the off season. Since there are lesser tourists from June to August, book your flights and tours around that time to get lower rates. And finally, book your tickets and tours months in advance to avoid paying the last-minute inflated rates.
