Rooted in the past but is happy in the present.<\/p>\n<p>Join us as we show you what Valencia has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/valencia\/valencia-tourist-card_21363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Valencia Cathedral<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9002\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Valencia.2.jpg\" alt=\"Valencia-Cathedral\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Valencia.2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Valencia.2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Valencia.2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bas\u00edlica Metropolitana de la Asunci\u00f3n de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Valencia is a fabulous and eclectic building exemplifying Valencia.\u00a0 A visit to this church is like seeing all of Valencia\u2019s history in one place; a history record \u2013 in stone.\u00a0 It stands in the centre of what was once the Roman city.\u00a0 Its original foundations are that of a temple dedicated to the goddess Diana that became a Visigoth cathedral, which became a Moorish mosque.\u00a0 During the 13th century it was expanded and converted into a Gothic style church.\u00a0 The 18<sup>th<\/sup> century involved restoration, building of the current fa\u00e7ade, rounding of the Gothic arches and introduction of Corinthian columns.\u00a0 It contains two wonderful paintings by the incomparable Francisco Goya.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Cathedral is not all about stone.\u00a0 The <em>Tribunal de las Aguas<\/em> (Water Court) dating from Moorish times still hears and mediates on matters relating to irrigation water.\u00a0 The court sits at noon every Thursday outside the <em>Puerta de Apostoles<\/em> (Portal of the Apostles).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The City of Arts and Sciences<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Santiago Calatrava is to Valencia what Anton Gaudi is to Barcelona.\u00a0 His creations are everywhere and one of the most remarkable (in the world) is the fabulous Ciutat de les Arts i les Ci\u00e8ncies (City of Arts and Sciences).<\/p>\n<p>This sci-fi looking complex sits on the now diverted T\u00faria river-bed.\u00a0 It comprises of an opera house, a science museum, an IMAX cinema, planetarium, Europe\u2019s largest aquarium and restaurants.\u00a0 Every one of the structures is a masterpiece of modern architecture. Also you can visit for a good price.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Old City (Ciudad Vieja or Ciutat Vella) Of Valencia<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9003\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Valencia.3.jpg\" alt=\"Valencia Old town\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" most beautiful, and well-preserved historic city centres in all of Europe.\u00a0 It is a picturesque maze of ancient winding streets and 17th century (and older) buildings.\u00a0 The loveliest section is the Barrio del Carmen.\u00a0 Packed with churches, towers, museums, Roman walls and buildings covering every era of Valencia\u2019s history.\u00a0 The old city is one of the most satisfying experiences in Valencia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>The Silk Exchange \u2013 La Lonja de la Seja<\/h4>\n<p>The extraordinary market was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1996.\u00a0 It is a 15<sup>th<\/sup> century, early Gothic structure with a strong Valencian flavour.\u00a0 One of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe, the contract rooms and the series of spiral columns are stunningly beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>La Tomatina, August<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9004\" province, not far from Valencia.\u00a0 Every year on the last Wednesday in August it goes crazy when people from all over the world come to indulge in a tomato fight of epic proportions.\u00a0 For just one hour the central square is a slippery red mayhem.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the local authorities organise the spectacle and 150,000 kilos of tomatoes are trucked in from the Extremadura region as ammunition for the festivities.\u00a0 Wear goggles if you are going to join in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Mercado Central \u2013 Central Market<\/h4>\n<p>How such a glorious building was conceived as a market is incredible!\u00a0 Buiilt in 1914 it still seems more modern than many a new skyscraper.\u00a0 Its modernist styling and size makes it one of the largest and oldest markets in Europe.\u00a0 With over a thousand stalls selling an unbelievable number of products, this graceful building boggles the mind.<\/p>\n<p>While most stalls sell food there are also souvenir shops and restaurants are located inside the market.\u00a0 It is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.\u00a0 The\u00a0atmosphere\u00a0is not to be missed.<\/p>\n<p>It is open every day except on Sunday from 07:30-14:30.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Indulge in a Paella<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9001\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Valencia.1.jpg\" alt=\"Valencia-paella\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" single city, then it would have to be paella.\u00a0 This wonderful mouth-watering Valencian creation is rice-based.\u00a0 Thereafter the chef\u2019s creativity takes over, adding anything from onions, tomatoes, beans or whatever vegetables are available to use.\u00a0 Richer\u00a0paella\u00a0can consist of rabbit, snails, duck, meat and chicken too.\u00a0 The contents of a <em>paella pan<\/em> once defined the status people.<\/p>\n<p>Every restaurant in Valencia serves delicious paella.\u00a0 Many establishments put paella filled pans in the window to advertise and draw in the clientele.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Turia Gardens<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Turia Gardens are testament to man sometimes getting it right.\u00a0 The River Turia flowed through the center of Valencia till the 1960s.\u00a0 Several disastrous floods saw the authorities diverting the river to the south of the city.\u00a0 The result today is the creation of the Turia Gardens \u2013 a spectacular setting for sports fields, walking, jogging and biking trails, plenty of trees and no motor traffic.\u00a0 The Gardens are a wonderful oasis where you can spend several happy hours relaxing with a picnic meal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Celebrate Las Fallas \u2013 Uniquely Valencian<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9005\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Valencia.5.jpg\" alt=\"Valencia-La-Fallas\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" Valencia\u2019s largest and most colourful festival, Las Fallas.\u00a0 The festival pays tribute to two distinct events.\u00a0 The ancient reason was to bid goodbye to winter and welcome the advent of spring.\u00a0 The other relatively recent one is to honour St Joseph, the carpenter.<\/p>\n<p>Groups of people or communities build huge intricate and exotic floats populated by gigantic puppets (<em>ninots <\/em>in Spanish) and parade them through the streets.\u00a0 There are plenty of fireworks, music and dancing all day and sometimes all night for a week.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the week \u2013 midnight 19<sup>th<\/sup> March \u2013 the fallas are burnt, accompanied by cultural and religious ceremonies.\u00a0 Each year, one ninot, is \u2018pardoned\u2019 \u2013 by popular vote.
