\u00a0This Sydneysider is putting those pesky Aussie stereotypes to bed once and for all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I made the move from Australia to the UK last year, and have been living in London for a good six months now. I\u2019ve happily(ish) adapted to a colder climate and the beyond-busy tube commutes, but there\u2019s one thing I can\u2019t accept; the series of bizarre questions and generally confused remarks I get about my home country. So today, I\u2019m shining light on the myths and misconceptions about Australia that you should ignore. Brits, take note.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1. We\u2019re not all country hicks<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\"Australians<\/p>\n

Despite what shows like \u2018Outback Truckers<\/a>\u2019 and the old faithful \u2018Crocodile Dundee<\/a>\u2019 may have you believe, us Australians don\u2019t spend our days saying things like \u201cstrewth\u201d and \u201cG\u2019day mate\u201d and donning akubras. Like you, many of us are city-folk, and we are just as glued to our smartphones as you Brits.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2. We don\u2019t live in fear of poisonous creepy crawlies or other such deadly creatures, and neither should you.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

It\u2019s true, we have sharks. We also have snakes and pretty sizeable spiders. All things considered though, the dangers of Australia\u2019s wildlife are widely exaggerated. You will not encounter spiders or snakes on your stroll through the park, nor will a great white snag you in your local swimming pool. On bushwalks and certain unflagged beaches there may be the chance of a sighting, but the chance is slim, and you don\u2019t need to be on red-alert your entire trip to Australia. Follow local precautions and \u201cyou\u2019ll be sweet\u201d (\u2026do people say that outside of Aus?).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

3. \u201cThrow another shrimp on the Barbie!\u201d is really not a thing.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Never in my 23 years in Australia have I ever been to or held a barbeque with shrimps involved. Now, I\u2019ve asked around, and occasionally \u2013 emphasis on occasionally<\/u> \u2013 there are prawn skewers present (not shrimps, prawns), but most of us prefer a good old-fashioned sausage sizzle or meat patty when lunchtime rolls around. Also, we call it a BBQ, not a \u201cbarbie\u201d; damn Paul Hogan.<\/p>\n

Thanks to our multicultural roots, Australia is also lucky enough to have a rich and diverse gourmet scene. Basically all Asian cuisines are gorged on daily, while Greek, Lebanese, Italian, German and really any type of food you can think of is available to munch on too.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

4. We don\u2019t use Aussie Hair products and Fosters is certainly not \u201cAustralian for beer\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Like the tiresome trend of \u2018Australian caf\u00e9s\u2019 in London, I find brands promoting themselves as\u00a0 Australian-favourites particularly perplexing, especially when they are certainly not favourites, or even used in Australia. \u00a0Fosters \u2013 which is actually owned by an English brewery \u2013 is not a popular or widely consumed drink in Australia, with many of us opting for a few Coronas with limes instead.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

5. We\u2019re not all tanned<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Unfortunately, I am not the proud owner of this healthy glow … or this surfboard<\/strong><\/h5>\n

As much as I\u2019d like this stereotype to be true, not all Australians are tanned. My porcelain pale skin that I douse in fake tan from time to time is the testament myth-buster here.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And finally, please stop making fun of me saying \u201cheaps\u201d\u2026. <\/strong><\/h4>\n

If you\u2019ve come across an Australian in your time, you probably will hear the word \u201cheaps\u201d, a lot \u2013 it\u2019s akin to the word \u201cloads\u201d (sort of). Since my move abroad, I\u2019ve been constantly berated for saying it \u2013 which was funny the first time but now it\u2019s just downright annoying. Let me be me guys!<\/p>\n
