Well in China it hits like clockwork three times a day\u2026and I\u2019ll be honest, with pretty much every whiff of freshly steamed bao on the street.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some aspects of <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/expats-foolproof-guide-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chinese culture <\/a><\/span><\/strong>I\u2019ll never get used to but eating is not one of them. Chinese food can seem strange and not all of it suits Western tastes but \u2013 big <strong>BUT<\/strong> &#8211; it can also be taste bud tingling and button-poppingly sublime.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few of my favourites in <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/shanghai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shanghai<\/a><\/span><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Xiao Long Bao @ Din Tai Fung <\/strong><em>&#8211; multiple locations citywide<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7027\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_3.1.jpg\" alt=\"Shanghai-dumplings \" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_3.1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_3.1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_3.1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a Taiwanese chain but don\u2019t let that fool you, they serve some of the best dumplings in China \u2013 and I\u2019m no novice. Try the Shanghainese speciality \u2018soup dumplings\u2019 (often sold with plastic straws) and be careful not to puncture the dough and lose the prized pork broth. The only thing sadder than losing the meaty nectar entirely would be scolding yourself on the first and ruining the rest. Don\u2019t pop it in all at once. Pierce, blow, sip!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Lamb Shank @ Dongbei Renjia <\/strong><em>&#8211; multiple locations citywide<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Nothing says fine dining like a pair of plastic gloves alongside your chopsticks. This northeastern chain serves up ginormous hunks of meat worthy of the Round Table &#8211; glove up and dive in!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Jianbing @ any street vendor <\/strong><em>&#8211; locations citywide<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7028\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_4.1.jpg\" alt=\"Shanghai-Jianbing\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_4.1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_4.1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_4.1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t take long for Jianbing to supersede coffee in my morning ritual. These savoury crispy pancakes can be whatever you want them to be: just point and pick as the whim takes you\u2026but never leave out the crunchy wontons. Trust.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hong Shao Rou @ Grandma\u2019s Kitchen &#8211; <\/strong><em>1 Hongqiao Rd, XuJiaHui, Xuhui Qu, Shanghai Shi, China, 200000<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7030\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_5.1.jpg\" alt=\"Shanghai-braised-pork-belly\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_5.1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_5.1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_5.1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Chairman Mao\u2019s favourite dish and my last meal request if I were to end up on Death Row (probably if anyone ever got in the way of me and my Hong Shao Rou). Pork belly is braised until it melts in the mouth and caramelised in a sweet, salty, seductively sticky sauce. My brother\u2019s partner makes the best version of this dish but good old Grandma isn\u2019t far behind. Try her mapo tofu too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Southeast Asian @ Gu Cun &#8211; <\/strong><em>14 Cangwu Rd, near TianLin Lu, Shanghai<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>My old favourite haunt is a virtually unknown and almost impossible to track down but after some obsessive Google mapping (to give Dev Patel in <em>Lion<\/em> a run for his money) I can share Gucun with the world. Everything is good but their curry &#8211; served in a hollowed out loaf of bread &#8211; is sublime!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Cocktails @ Barbarossa<em> &#8211; <\/em><\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/FU5Kj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">231 Nanjing Xi Lu, near Huangpi Nan Lu, Shanghai<\/a><\/em><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7032\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_6.1.jpg\" alt=\"Shanghai-Barbarossa \" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_6.1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_6.1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_shanghai_6.1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sip cocktails and toque on a hookah in this iconic venue in the middle of People\u2019s Park. The only thing beating its location is its happy hour \u2013 G\u0101nb\u0113i to that!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Egg Tarts @ Lillian Bakery <\/strong><em>&#8211; multiple locations citywide<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6838\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_china_food_1.jpg\" alt=\"Shanghai-egg-tart\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_china_food_1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_china_food_1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rsz_china_food_1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If a croissant and a cr\u00e8me br\u00fbl\u00e9e were star-crossed lovers then the egg tart would be their love child. Flaky pastry cups voluptuously creamy custard filling \u2013 at RMB 4 a pop this is by far the cheapest ecstasy on the market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Uyghur Samsa @ Shanghai Muslim Food Market<\/strong> <em>\u2013 No.4, Lane 1328 Changde Lu,\u00a0Shanghai<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Nothing beats the sizzle of lamb kebabs and scent of cumin wafting down Changde Street every Friday afternoon and nothing says the weekend like Uyghur Samsas. \u00a0The Muslim take on a samosa is spherical, doughier and smuggles some serious lamb juice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hot-pot @ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.culinarybackstreets.com\/shanghai\/2013\/hai-di-lao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hai Di Lao<\/a> <\/strong><em>&#8211; multiple locations citywide<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><iframe title=\"Hai Di Lao Noodle Dance\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3BQKfJstGYQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">YouTube clip courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC0TF_OeBcUSdcnbzsLnTkFw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">looxx008<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hot-pot restaurants are a dime a dozen in China but Hai Di Lao is one of a kind. It\u2019s known for over-the-top customer service and diners have their shoes shined, nails done and necks massaged whilst waiting to be seated. Order from an encyclopaedia of raw meats, vegetables, tofu, dumplings and everything under the sun before cooking them yourself in a steaming broth. Insider tip: Order the house made noodles for some dinner entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Visiting China soon?
