While there\u2019s no denying the majesty of Machu Pichu or the splendour of Chicha Nitza, there are a plethora of pilgrimage sites and ancient cities out there beyond these big names.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Look past the limelight and be dazzled by the labyrinthine secrets sitting on the sidelines:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Tikal<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6226\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_1.jpg\" alt=\"Latin-America-Tikal\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Taking top spot, Tikal is my favourite of all the ruins. Compared to the mayhem of neighbouring <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Tulum<\/span><\/strong> and Chicha Niza, Tikal is a haven of tranquillity. Monkey chatter and birdsong aside.<\/p>\n<p>Venture to Guatemala to uncover a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the largest Mayan cities in the world. Hidden away in the dense jungle of Tikal National Park, the 6 km 2 city contains more than 3,000 buildings, pyramids and temples.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss: watching the sun rise\/set over the jungle city from Lady Macaw\u2019s pyramid.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Ciudad Perdida<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6227\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_2.jpg\" alt=\"Ciudad-Perdida\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Colombia\u2019s Lost City is more than six centuries older than Machu Picchu and one of one of the largest known archaeological sites in South America\u2026discovered so far!<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss: The trek \u2013 unless you plan on helicoptering in there\u2019s no way you can miss out on this epic experience. A four-day walk from the nearest road! Visiting the citadel is a hardy adventure through the dense jungle of the Sierra Nevada mountains and valleys.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Palenque<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6228\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_3.jpg\" alt=\"Palenque\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_3-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Remote, tangled up in vines and hidden under jungle canopy Palenque is described as the American equivalent to King Tut\u2019s tomb in Egypt. King Pakal was discovered here, buried along with human sacrifices in a jade-filled tomb.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss: the T-Rex! For such teeny-tiny critters, howler monkeys make a hell of a racket. So loud they became dinosaur sound effects in the Jurassic Park movies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Choquequirao<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_america_.jpg\" alt=\"Latin-America-Choquequirao\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_america_.jpg 800w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_america_-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rsz_latin_america_-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lastly Choquequirao translates from Quechua as the \u2018cradle of gold\u2019 but is more commonly called the \u2018other\u2019 or even the \u2018new Machu Pichu\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>So why does Machu Pichu take all the limelight? It\u2019s simple: located at the foot of the snowy Mt.
