With Christmas just around the corner, the holiday season is well and truly upon us. For those lucky few jetting off\u00a0in the festive period, there\u2019s only one cloud in your holiday horizon: tourist restrictions. From selfie stick bans in Milan to limited Segway tours<\/a> in Barcelona, these are the restrictions you need to know about this travel season – consider this your early Christmas present. <\/b><\/p>\n

Solo travellers are going to have to make some new friends if they fancy\u00a0getting\u00a0a good snap in Milan. As of July 2016, the use of selfie sticks throughout the city has been banned, with the local government looking to rid the city of the \u201canti-social behaviour\u201d the sticks encourage.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Milan government isn\u2019t the only one to crack down on our vanity. In the Palace of Versailles<\/strong><\/a>, Rome\u2019s Colosseum<\/strong><\/a>, Vatican City<\/a><\/strong>, Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum<\/strong><\/a>, and Beijing’s Forbidden City<\/strong><\/a> using selfie sticks\u00a0is also a big no-no. <\/span><\/p>\n

While no formal restrictions are in place just yet, <\/span>strong calls from locals<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to preserve Venice\u2019s historic city are changing up how travellers are able to spend their time in the Floating City. \u201cPeople counters\u201d now take watch at popular sites to monitor overcrowding and a ban against new accommodation in the older city centre has been agreed on by the local council. <\/span><\/p>\n

Amsterdam says no to new tourist shops<\/b><\/h4>\n

You may find less places to pick up a fridge magnet in Amsterdam, but you will enjoy\u00a0plenty more independent local boutiques. With more than <\/span>280 shops catering for tourists in the town centre of the Dutch capital, <\/span>the ban on new tourist shops came after locals voiced their frustration with overcrowding and the countless bucks party trips to the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Japan gives a lesson in tourist etiquette<\/b><\/h4>\n

The Japanese are a polite, courteous bunch, and they expect their visitors to be too. Last year <\/span>Hokkaido Tourism Organization<\/a><\/strong> launched an etiquette guide for would-be tourists, where punctuality, leaving food on the plate, queuing in an orderly fashion (Brits, you got this), and being softly spoken topped the list of expectations for\u00a0visitors to the country. <\/span><\/p>\n

Disobedient tourists \u201cwill get wet\u201d in Florence<\/b><\/h4>\n

Every lunchtime, the steps outside Florence<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s churches are hosed down in an attempt to stop tourists from eating, drinking and littering around the city\u2019s most striking sites. \u201cIf the tourists want to sit there, they\u2019ll get wet,\u201d Florentine mayor Dario Nardella simply puts it. <\/span><\/p>\n

Seg-no way in Barcelona<\/b><\/h4>\n

Segway tours and electric scooters are a thing of the past in Barcelona\u2019s Old City and along the seafront. The new ban came into play in August of this year.<\/span><\/p>\n
