I regularly get to justify trips away as &#8220;research&#8221;, and sometimes I\u2019m even lucky enough to receive extra funds to head abroad. I know, the dream. While there\u2019s plenty of trials and tribulations that come with freelance life, being able to travel when, where and as much as I want is a pretty amazing bonus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But before you rush off, frantically type up a resignation letter and slam it down on your bosses desk \u00e0 la Jerry Maguire, there\u2019s a few home truths about travelling that I wanted to share. Despite what the flawless feeds\u00a0of\u00a0travel bloggers may tell you, there\u2019s a\u00a0not so\u00a0glamorous side to jetsetting. These are the universal struggles all travellers\u00a0will relate to&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Lost luggage (or even the idea of it\u2026)<\/b><\/h4>\n<h4><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/MwplREBPuU2go\" width=\"480\" height=\"262\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/h4>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>When I finally find\u00a0my case&#8230;<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every time I anxiously wait at the luggage conveyor belt for more than five minutes, I\u2019m convinced &#8211; my bag is gone, and along with it my makeup, that really expensive perfume I never got to wear and my brand new laptop. Brilliant. As I see other happy flyers collect their bags and head off into the distance (cue: sunset), I curse their smug posteriors &#8211; and suspiciously eye up their suitcases should they have taken\u00a0mine by mistake or otherwise. Clearly airports bring out the worst in me. I eventually spot my bag and scarper away from the dreaded luggage collection point as quickly as possible. Lost luggage and the awkward dance of trying to find your bag without losing the will to live: not glamorous at all. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truth be told, airports have never actually lost my cabin baggage. Now I\u2019ve put the dreaded words down on paper though, it\u2019s only a matter of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>People on planes standing up before we\u2019ve even touched the ground<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granted more of an annoyance than a typical \u2018struggle\u2019, but why do so many people feel the need to jump out of their seats before the plane lands? Maybe they put something in the water, but it seems whenever I get to an airport everyone suddenly becomes very rushed, and I\u2019m not a fan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>The dreaded middle seat<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/3ohs863yl3R5Q7Ep0I\" width=\"480\" height=\"271\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have easy access to the bathroom and you can\u2019t see the nice window views. You\u2019re also likely to be stuck beside really chatty folks, who may or may not have brought their own smelly snacks from home for the ride. Whichever way you turn it, the middle seat on planes is not fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Bringing back more yen than you know what to do with, but not being bothered enough to exchange it<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>A recent study by <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visa.co.uk\/newsroom\/forgotten-cash-british-holidaymakers-sit-on-ps663m-stack-of-leftover-foreign-currency-1240304?returnUrl=\/newsroom\/listing?tag=kevin%20jenkins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Visa Europe<\/a><\/strong><\/span> revealed British travellers have an average of \u00a355 worth of foreign currency gathering dust in their desk drawers. Glad I\u2019m not the only one.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Passport picture woes<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/10rbvXnxudfl5u\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>My thought process when getting a new passport photo taken is as follows: \u2018Okay, you\u2019re going to have to live with this shot for the next 10 years at least. Keep in mind many people will see it in that time, so make sure it\u2019s nice and most of all, <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">normal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u2019 \u2018Wait, am I allowed to smile in these yet?<\/span>\u2019 \u2018I\u2019ll go for a half smile just in case.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s taken and I look deranged. My light blonde hair looks blue under the fluorescent lights. There is no such thing as a good passport photo. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Not understanding what anyone is saying but you\u2019ve already asked too many times for them to repeat it, so just smiling and nodding instead<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/pXAvSICRT9h72\" width=\"480\" height=\"409\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying to\u00a0converse\u00a0through the haze of thick Scottish accents is no easy feat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>&#8230; but after a few drinks, language barriers are a thing of the past <\/b><\/h4>\n<p><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/o7tssgBcLgoCY\" width=\"480\" height=\"365\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or are they? <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Jetlag<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme jetlag is a downer on any trip, especially if you\u2019re only in\u00a0a new destination for a day or so. Luckily, we wrote <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/beat-the-jetlag-beast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>this post<\/strong><\/a><\/span> about how to beat (or at least manage)\u00a0the jetlag beast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Packing (and unpacking)<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/VR4Xdxj5MXDna\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Necessity-only packing isn\u2019t my style. I want plenty of outfit options while I\u2019m away, but I definitely don\u2019t want to\u00a0schlep a heavy bag around. Therein lies the problem. Unpacking is\u00a0its own kind of demon. I usually end up leaving all my clothes in my unopened suitcase until I desperately want to wear something that is, by that time, very crumpled. Joy!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Getting very confused when faced with different currencies <\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a recent trip, after standing around for ten minutes trying to figure out the value of my purchase in pounds. I confidently strode to the till counter and paid \u00a36 for a water bottle. My bank charges later revealed the fail. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Public transport<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/z2nGSlAAXN2Ao\" width=\"480\" height=\"336\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those poor souls heading to China this year and looking to <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/expats-foolproof-guide-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nip around the city<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>o<\/span>n the train<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we salute you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>When you only have two weeks\u2019 annual leave and you want to explore all of South East Asia and New Zealand<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Something\u2019s not adding up here. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Wanting to do it all over again<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter how tough my trip was, how lost I got, or how awful the plane etiquette. I always leave wanting more.
