For me, visiting different wine regions and their vineyards is like entering Willy Wonka\u2019s chocolate factory\u2026if the lake were filled with wine, not chocolate, and you had to be over 18 to enjoy it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My love of the grown-up grape juice has led me to discover a generous measure of reds, whites and everything in between beyond the usual French, Italian and Spanish suspects. Discover picturesque vineyards and family-run wineries in these unexpected places:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>1. Cafayate<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4803\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-1.jpg\" alt=\"wine-regions-argentina\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-1.jpg 1700w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-1-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-1-1200x800.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I think of Argentina, juicy steak and large glasses of red wine are the first things to come to mind &#8211; a winning combination wherever, whenever and whatever you\u2019re drinking. There\u2019s more wine in Argentina than Malbec and more wine regions than Mendoza so leave the two M\u2019s to take the glory and slip away to sip on <strong>vino<\/strong> in Cafayate. Mendoza\u2019s little sister and Argentina\u2019s little secret is surrounded by spectacular Andean scenery begging to be explored between tastings. Finish with wine sorbet in the central plaza.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2. Tamar Valley<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4804\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-tamar-valley.jpg\" alt=\"wine-regions-tamar-valley\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-tamar-valley.jpg 1700w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-tamar-valley-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-tamar-valley-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-tamar-valley-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-tamar-valley-1200x800.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a reason people keep emigrating to Australia and it\u2019s not the sun, the sea or even Chris Hemsworth\u2026it\u2019s the bottomless supply of wine. Stay clear of the <strong>goon <\/strong>(cheap cask wine) and head straight for the vineyards. The mainland has internationally recognised names like the <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/sydney\/hunter-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hunter<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/adelaide\/barossa-valley-wine-tasting-tour-with-lunch_31702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barossa Valleys<\/a><\/span><\/strong> but Australia\u2019s unsung island has the best cool climate wines. Head to Tasmania\u2019s Tamar Valley for pinot noirs and sparkling chardonnays. My two favourite wineries, <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jansz.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jansz<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kreglingerwineestates.com\/cellar-door\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pipers Brook<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, are only a convenient stumble away from each other.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>3. Douro Valley <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4805\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-portugal.jpg\" alt=\"wine-regions-portugal\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-portugal.jpg 1700w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-portugal-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-portugal-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-portugal-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-portugal-1200x801.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Portugal is famous for its Port but not all its wine is drunk fortified and the <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/porto\/hill-towns-and-vineyards-of-the-douro-valley-tour-from-porto_5049\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Douro Valley<\/a><\/span><\/strong> is the perfect place to taste the local <strong>vinho<\/strong>. There are so many quintas (estates) to choose from but my favourite is <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chryseia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quinta De Roriz<\/a>,<\/span><\/strong> sitting in a natural amphitheatre on the banks of the river. Order a glass of Chryseia and drink in the view.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>4. Mosel<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4806\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-germany.jpg\" alt=\"wine-regions-germany\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-germany.jpg 1700w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-germany-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-germany-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-germany-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-germany-1200x801.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more to Germany than bierkellers and Oktoberfest. Discover the traditional villages, historic castles and, of course, <strong>wein<\/strong> while river cruising between Rieslings on the Moselle River. The steepest wine-growing region in the world gives all the grapes direct sunlight and makes for a stunning backdrop to enjoy a glass of white.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>5. I did but this is far from the case. The ice isn\u2019t the spanner in the works; it\u2019s the essential part. The grapes are harvested whilst frozen to yield a sweeter and far more intense nectar, known as ice wine &#8211; or dessert wine to you and me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>6. Turkey has the fourth-largest vineyard acreage in the world, a mere 2% of which becomes <strong>\u015farap<\/strong>. You know what they say, quality not quantity. Thrace is the largest of Turkey\u2019s wine producing regions but I\u2019m eyeing up the picturesque seaside town of Urla for my next tipple.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>7.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/medocainevtt.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La M\u00e9docaine<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4809\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isango.com\/theguidebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-france.jpg\" alt=\"wine-regions-france\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-france.jpg 1700w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-france-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-france-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-france-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/assets-guidebook.isango.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wine-regions-france-1200x800.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, this isn\u2019t one of the unknown wine regions but it is an outlandish experience. Can you imagine anything more idyllic than an afternoon spent meandering through vineyards in the French countryside by bicycle? Well, this isn\u2019t it. Mountain bikers take on anything up to 80 km in this off-road race through M\u00e9doc vineyards and castles.
