An Iban longhouse (a longhouse is a whole village of a community under one long roof) is great for a cultural insight into this indigenous aboriginal tribe of Malaysia. See the wide range of fine and beautifully made handicraft and ordinary household items for daily use and you will marvel at the intricate designs and clever colour combination.
You will be picked up from your hotel in Miri/ Mulu and taken in a private vehicle for a full day’s sightseeing tour of famous landmarks around Miri.
Begin your tour with a morning drive through scenic countryside, populated by oil palm plantations and local pepper farms, to the Lambir National Park for an invigorating 20-minute trek to the waterfalls. This natural reserve is brimming with a wide diversity of plant life. Up to 157 species of birds and a variety of bats, monkeys and pangolins have been spotted here.
Continue the drive to the Niah National Park. On arriving at the Park take a longboat ride at Pangkalan Lobang across the river to reach the Niah Museum.
Head towards the Niah Caves, reportedly one of the earliest birthplaces of civilization in Asia. The oldest human remains, dating back to 40,000 years, were found in Niah, making the Park one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. A tour of the cave will take you through the Great and Painted Caves as well as allowing you to see the age-old remnants of bird's nest harvesting equipment inside the cave (now a government controlled activity).
After an approximately 3-hour tour of the caves, stop at the Niah Park canteen for a local lunch.
On the way back, stop at an Iban longhouse for a short visit and cultural insight into this aboriginal tribe. A longhouse is a whole village of a community under one long roof.
At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Miri/ Mulu.
