Wind your way along Arizona’s scenic Apache Trail, which the Apache Indians first used to cut through the rugged Superstition Mountains.
Pass man-made lakes that bend in unison with the trail and small outcroppings of vegetation that look stunningly green against the backdrop of parched reds and browns.
Stop in an abandoned gold town where eager prospectors once flocked in search of their fortune and see the last surviving stagecoach stop along the trail, a vestige of a wild and unsettled America.
Take a serene steamboat cruise on the still waters of Canyon Lake and learn from you captain about the former inhabitants of the region.
You will be picked up by air-conditioned coach from your Phoenix/Scottsdale hotel for this Apache Trail Tour and Canyon Lake Cruise. You will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide that knows the area inside and out.
Drive along Arizona’s scenic Apache Trail, a steep road that snakes along a chain of man-made lakes in the shadow of the legendary Superstition Mountains.
Stop for a visit at the Goldfield Ghost Town, where a small community sprouted up after a gold strike in 1892. In its prime, more than 400 people lived in the town, but when the gold ran out after five years, Goldfield slowly came apart at the seams and was abandoned. The surviving saloons, boarding house, general store, meat market and schoolhouse are a reminder of the promise, often unmet, of the American frontier.
Forge ahead to Canyon Lake and enjoy a 1.5-hour Dolly Steamboat cruise on one of Arizona’s most beautiful desert bodies of water.
Look for big horn sheep grazing in the surrounding hills and bald eagles roaming the sky as your boat captain regales you with tales of the Apache Indians.
After your cruise, stop at the bustling town of Tortilla Flat (population 6), the last extant stagecoach stop along the Apache Trail, where road-weary pioneers once sought a moment’s respite.
A lunch stop will be made at either Canyon Lake Marina or Tortilla Flat (payable direct).
You will be returned to your Phoenix / Scottsdale hotel at tour’s end.
