Enjoy one of the most romantic dinners you’ll ever experience at the spellbinding Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte in the southern outskirts of Paris. Then explore this neo-classical masterpiece by candle light while classical music wafts through the night air. This is a tour that evokes like no other the luxury and opulence of France before the revolution. The evening begins with a visit to the carriage museum, which cover coaches from the 10th to 20th centuries. Then sit back and savour the moment with a three-course candlelit dinner at L'Ecureuil, a restaurant located in a wing of the castle's outbuildings. Only the finest, fresh local ingredients are used. As the sun sets over this majestic setting, visit the chateau proper with audio-guide and see the gardens, which are lit by 2,000 candles to the sound of timeless classical music. The thousands of flickering flames make for a sensory and unforgettable visit.
The vast Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte was built from 1658 to 1661 for Nicolas Fouquet, Marquis de Belle Île, Viscount of Melun and Vaux, and finance minister of Louis XIV, the mythical Sun King. For Fouquet to be able to build such a lavish palace shows just how important and powerful he was. It also proved to be his downfall as the king decided there was simply far too much splendour on display at a banquet in the newly finished chateau. Fouquet would never enjoy his creation as he saw out the rest of his days in jail – but it did serve to inspire Louis to build Versailles.
