Visit pioneers like Metro Pictures and Paula Cooper, and galleries that have sprung up on the outskirts of Chelsea with new exciting programs. Home to economic titans such as Mary Boone and Matthew Marks, as well as promising younger gallery owners like Zach Feuer and Oliver Kamm, the Chelsea art tour is an absolute must-do for every art connoisseur.
Itinerary
Meet the tour at the meeting point (specified in the voucher) at the scheduled time. Every Chelsea art tour covers a different route and different galleries. Accompanied by an art curator/art critic/artist, you will be visiting the New York’s top art galleries as well as smaller, hidden ateliers showcasing emerging talent.
The tour begins with a general introduction of the neighbourhood itself, which covers the area from 13th to 29th street and between 7th and 11th avenues. Chelsea first rose to art world prominence in the late nineties when there was a mass exodus of galleries from the city's previous art hotspot, SoHo. You will be given a brief overview about the economics behind the prominence of Chelsea in the art industry.
Apart from the famous galleries, the tour also covers the fringe of Chelsea where a string of up-and-coming dealers have set up exciting programs. The young hip galleries of Chelsea are thronged by emerging artists and are a promotional pad for new talent.
