Overview

The charterhouse at Valldemossa is a former monastery situated in this picturesque town nestling in the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains in a landscape dotted with groves of almond trees, carob and strangely twisted thousand-year-old olive trees.

The town was also the birthplace of St Catalina Tomas, still venerated in the area. However the main attraction is to the charterhouse (Cartuja) itself. The building was founded as a royal residence by King Jaume II of Mallorca in the 14th century and later converted into a monastery of the Carthusian order until was secularised in 1835.

The complex is now a museum, consisting of the main church, which is still in use, the former pharmacy, various cells and rooms of the prior and the monks, the former library, dining room, garden, as well as cells No.2 and No.4 where Polish composer Frederic Chopin and his lover, French writer George Sand, spent the inhospitable winter of 1838/9.

Learn all about this famous couple and their tempestuous relationship with each other and locals as well as other illustrious visitors such as the Nicaraguan poet Ruben Dario, Spanish Enlightenment intellectual Jovellanos and Catalan poet and painter Santiago Rusiñol. There’s an exhibition of documents commemorating Chopin and Sand’s stay, as well as an art collection that includes a number of contemporary works.
