Overview

During the 15th and 16th century, Portugal joined other European countries in maritime exploration to colonize parts of Africa, the Americas, the Middle East and the Far East. A period of immense importance for Portuguese trade that not only led to the creation of colonial empires but also resulted in the globalization of Portugal. Set off on a journey with your guide and see the process unfold as you visit the places in Lisbon related to this special moment in Portugal’s history – the Age of the Maritime Discoveries.

Walk along the Palace Courtyard and the port areas and learn from your guide how this strategic trade movement changed the world. See the multiculturalism that arrived at the shores of Lisbon and made a huge impact on the country. Continue your tour with a short boat ride to Belém neighbourhood and visit the monumental and historical areas like the Heironomyte Monastery and the Discoveries Monument that defined this period of economic progress and prosperity. Dig into Belem’s homegrown pastry - Pastel de Belem, after all such an overwhelming tour needs a sweet treat in the end.
