During the 15th and 16th century, Portugal joined other European countries in maritime exploration to colonize parts of Africa, the Americas, the Middle East and the Far East. A period of immense importance for Portuguese trade that not only led to the creation of colonial empires but also resulted in the globalization of Portugal.
