Overview

Head deep into the heart of the forbidding Mojave Desert and discover Red Rock Canyon, one of its most beautiful areas. This six-hour tour follows a scenic route that stops at a number of sights and attractions, such as Calico Springs, the pre-historic rock art at Willow Springs, and the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. You will be taken aback by how much there is to see near Las Vegas.

The fun starts at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area with a leisurely 21-kilometer (13-mile) loop drive along a beautiful, rugged landscape. Pass by Calico Springs, a geological wonderland of cross-bedded Jurassic Aztec sandstone. See limestone roasting pits used to cook agave hearts by the Paiute tribe of Native Americans. Enjoy the views from High Point Overlook, which is almost 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) above sea level. Then stop at Willow Springs to admire the stunning rock art, known as petroglyphs and pictographs, and see the handprints of hunter-gatherers from thousands of years ago.

Continue to the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, a verdant oasis situated on the Old Spanish Trail. Aside from its rustic charms, its claim to fame is that it was once the playground of eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes. Several springs and cooler temperatures in the high altitude combine to create a lush landscape that contrasts starkly with the surrounding areas.
