  • Overview & Itinerary

See the stunning lunar landscapes of Lanzarote at close quarters on this exciting trek through Timanfaya National Park.

Created by devastating volcanic eruptions in the 18th century, the surreal scenery of Timanfaya is out of this world. You will see spectacular craters, fantastical lava sculptures, and volcanic cones in a vivid array of colors from rusty red to purplish black. An expert guide will tell you all about the fascinating features you encounter on the 6 km walk.

Vegetation grows slowly in Lanzarote’s arid conditions, and the landscape has changed little in the last 300 years. Visitors can appreciate the raw beauty of the terrain and gain an insight into what planet Earth must have been like when first formed.

Hiking is restricted in Timanfaya National Park, and this organised trek is one of the few opportunities to step out on the lava fields. Book early to make sure you can enjoy this incredible experience.

For your Timanfaya National Park Volcano Trek you will depart by in the morning from one of the designated points in Lanzarote and travel to Timanfaya National Park where the trek begins.

The walk is about 6 km and of average difficulty. Led by an expert guide you will traverse the extraordinary lunar landscape of the Park.

The entire area is of volcanic origin. The most recent eruptions took place in the 18th century (between the years of 1730 and 1736) when more than 100 volcanoes, covering more than 50 km², rose up and devastated this part of the island (including several villages). The area is still volcanically active and high temperatures, close to 600°C, are measured at just 10 meters underground.

All the volcanic structures are well preserved because the arid climate of Lanzarote means that the growth of vegetation cover is very slow. Therefore the landscape before you is like a huge open-air museum of volcanology.

On the way, your guide will point out the fascinating features of Timanfaya –the blue-black lava fields, spectacular craters, lava tunnels, lava lakes and colorful volcanic cones – and you will also see scenes of idyllic beauty.

After the trek your coach will return you to your original departure point.
