Nestled in the Himalayan hills with the river Ganga flowing by, Rishikesh is beautiful and serene. The air is filled with the soothing strains of temple prayers and the smell of incence.
The evening aarti (prayer ceremony) on the river bank is a sight to behold with hundreds of twinkling earthen oil lamps floating on the Ganga. The resounding temple bells, the chants and prayers - all draw you deeper into its spiritual atmosphere. Staying at the Glasshouse on the Ganges adds to the charm of the place. Once a garden retreat of a Maharaja and now a hotel, The Glasshouse has rooms that offer splendid views of the river and the picturesque hills.
Come and experience a sense of peace and calm in the holy town of Rishikesh on your India tour.
Arrive at Haridwar from Delhi by the Shatabdi Express in an air-conditioned chair car (train ticket included. Tentative train timings: 0655h / 1125h (06:55 am/11:25 am). Upon arrival, you will be picked up and will be taken to your hotel The Glass House on the Ganges, which lies about 45 kilometres away from Haridwar.
The Glasshouse on the Ganges was once the private garden-retreat on an erstwhile Maharaja. Set in the picturesque hills, it is a secluded property overlooking the river Ganga. It has six cottages, and also a garden of tropical plants, full of rare birds and butterflies and a private sand beach. The Glasshouse is ideally located for nature walks, river rafting and visiting the temples of the holy towns of Rishikesh (which lies about 23 kilometres away) and Haridwar. You will stay in a standard room. The hotel has a multi-cuisine restaurant that serves Continental and Indian cuisine. Your package includes breakfast daily throughout your stay.
Spend the night at the hotel.
In the morning, accompanied by an English-speaking guide, set off on a sightseeing trip to Rishikesh.
Visit the important temples and ashrams, and walk across the Ram and Laxman Jhoolas, the two suspension bridges over the river Ganga. The Ram Jhoola connects Shivanand Ashram on the east bank with Swargashram on the west. The Laxman Jhoola is further upstream and it is believed that Hindu God Ram’s brother, Laxman crossed the Ganga on a jute rope at this point. While a cluster of ashrams are close to the Ram Jhoola, the Laxman Jhoola has crowded bazaars (markets) and cafes near it. Listen to your guide tell you more about the myths and legends associated with the temples and ashrams.
In the evening attend the aarti (prayer ceremony) ceremony on the ghats (river banks) of the Ganga. As priests sing devotional songs with ornate oil lamps in hand, people release earthen oil lamps in the river as a mark of respect, creating an image that will stay with you for a lifetime.
Return to your hotel for the night.
Spend the day at leisure. You may enjoy nature walks along the picturesque hills, or choose to sit by the river and enjoy the peace and quiet of the place. You could visit Haridwar and see the temples there. (Please note: all payable direct. No transport service is envisaged for today). Spend the night at the hotel.
Today you will be taken to the railway station in Haridwar to board the Shatabdi Express to Delhi (train ticket included. Tentative train timings: 1813h / 2245h (06:13 pm/10:45 pm).
