Overview

At almost 10,000 feet, Zugspitze is Germany’s highest mountain. Its grey, craggy peaks are often shrouded in mist, giving it a somewhat eerie appearance. However, on clear days you can see over a thousand Bavarian, Austrian, Swiss and Italian peaks. In winter, it is a magical fantasy of glittering ice and snow; however the view is fantastic in all seasons.

Ettal Monastery is a castle-like monastery in the Western Alpine foothills. For centuries before the invention of the train, it was secluded by its somewhat inconvenient location—an arduous trip to nearby villages. Its interior is a feast for the eyes, with especially beautiful frescos in the dome. The monastery’s resilience is evident by its lasting presence throughout war and the destruction of its exterior. It has been rebuilt many times, hence the beautifully renovated exterior.

Itinerary

You will be picked up in an air-conditioned coach at the front of the “Karstadt” department store, across the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof, Bahnhofplatz) for a Mountains and Monastery Sightseeing Tour. A bilingual (English and German) guide will accompany you on this tour.

The tour begins with a visit to Ettal Monastery, a Benedictine monastery in the village of Ettal. Ettal is located approximately 900 meters above sea level, located in a narrow mountain valley of the Western Alpine foothills close to Oberammergau.

After visiting Ettal Monastery, the tour will pass through Garmisch-Partenkirchen where you’ll get your first glimpse of Zugspitze, jutting abruptly out of the earth. Reaching Eibsee, you’ll take the cable car to the summit of Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak. Upon reaching the summit, you’ll have a chance to enjoy the fresh alpine air, and the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Atop the Zugspitze, you may wish to relax over a drink (payable direct).

The tour will descend Zugspitze via the cogwheel train. The views of the Alps can be seen in both the cable car, and cogwheel train. Protected from the elements, you’ll see why this is such a popular tourist attraction. Zugspitze is absolutely stunning.

The tour ends at the starting point, where you will be dropped off.
