Overview

Leave the hustle bustle of the city and escape to the tranquil countryside of Normandy on an enchanting two-day getaway.

On the first day, explore historic Rouen, the ‘Town with a Thousand Spires’, where Joan of Arc was martyred in 1431. Then visit the Normandy beaches, scene of one of the most courageous military operations of the 20th century – the D-Day landings – and see the poignant American Cemetery.

After a night in Caen travel to St. Malo. Walk through the cobbled streets of this seaside town and hear about its colorful past as a nest of fearsome pirates.

Continue to Mont-Saint-Michel, a Benedictine Abbey perched on a rocky island and one of the most recognisable landmarks in France. Enjoy a guided tour of this stunningly beautiful Gothic building and marvel at the way it has been sculpted to match the contours of the rock.

Itinerary

Day 1 (Thursday): Paris to Caen

You will travel out of Paris on the Normandy motorway and will make your first stop in Rouen, the historic capital of Normandy. Here you will enjoy a walking tour in the old town. Rouen was the place of the martyrdom of Joan of Arc who was burnt at the stake on Place du Vieux Marché. It is full of beautiful religious architecture and is known as the “Town with a Thousand Spires”.

The tour continues to Honfleur with striking views of the newly built Normandy Bridge on the way. In Honfleur there will be free time for lunch before you continue to the D-Day Landing Beaches of Normandy. (Lunch is not included in your tour but your lunch-break gives you the chance to try local culinary specialties.)

The stretch of the Norman coast with its beaches variously codenamed Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword is world famous for the part it played in the Second World War. On 6th June 1944, the D-Day landings of Allied troops in Normandy heralded the liberation of France and Continental Europe and the onset of the Battle of Normandy and Operation Overlord.

Five thousand boats, 12,000 planes and 156,000 soldiers – American, Canadian and English, as well as other forces from the rest of the allied countries: 'Forces Françaises Libres' ('Free French Forces') along with Polish, Belgian, Czech, Dutch and Norwegian troops – took part in the operation.

The tour will visit the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach. This cemetery contains the graves of 9,387 US servicemen, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations.

There will be a short stop at Arromanches, where one of the two Mulberry Harbours was built. (Mulberry Harbours were temporary harbours constructed by the British during the Normandy invasion).

You will stay the night in Caen at a 3-star hotel with dinner (but not drinks) included. The hotel has a swimming pool and Wifi is available.

Day 2 (Friday): Caen to Paris

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, you will board your coach and drive to St. Malo on the coast of Brittany.

This walled port city was once notorious for piracy! Hear some of the tales as your guide leads you on a tour of the town including a walk along the ramparts and a visit to the Cathedral.

You will have lunch in St Malo (payable direct) and then depart for Mont-Saint-Michel, on the Brittany-Normandy border. You will be taken on a guided tour of the famous abbey which stands on a tidal island, dominating the bay of the same name. The entire bay is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After the abbey tour you have free time for strolling and shopping before the return journey. Your vehicle leaves Mont-Saint-Michel at around 4:30pm. There will be one ‘comfort stop’ on the way back to Paris and you will arrive back in the city around 9:15pm.
