Key Highlights

  • The oasis city of Egypt is popular for its pyramid complex

Overview

Embark on a journey to the ancient Egypt pyramids and ruins of the Greco-Roman civilisation in Fayoum, the oasis city of Egypt. Explore this ancient city of Egyptian pyramids and monuments, popular with kings and high officials as a pleasure-ground for their sports of hunting, fishing and fowling.

See the pyramid complex of Senwosret II, Amenemhet III , Hawara and Al Lahun, taking your time to decipher the hidden mysteries buried therein. Appreciate the architecture and also the unique materials used to build them, like mud bricks and white limestone casing. You will see a remarkable disparity in the styling and detailing of each of the four pyramids and this uniqueness has given them their world-famous status.

Itinerary

In the morning, you will be picked up in an air-conditioned vehicle from your hotel in Cairo. Accompanied by a guide, you will be taken to the city of Fayoum.

Fayoum thrived during the Middle Kingdom when the fertile area around Birket Qarun began to be developed as a pleasure-ground in which kings and high officials hunted.

Your first stop of the day is the Pyramid of Hawara and Al Lahun. As the oasis of El-Faiyum became more important during Dynasty XII, a number of religious monuments were built there and the next pharaoh to construct his pyramid in the region was Amenemhet III. This was not the king’s first choice of burial site, he had previously built a pyramid at Dahshur, to the north, during the early part of his long reign. Later, he opted to begin a second pyramid at Hawara, near the site of his grandfather’s monument at Al Lahun. The king’s second pyramid was built with a core of mud bricks and white limestone casing, which was removed in Roman times. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch you will continue to explore the Greco-Roman monuments of the ruins of Karanis town. Here you will find monuments dating from the Ptolemaic, Coptic and early Arab settlement.

On leaving Karanis, you will be dropped back to your hotel in Cairo.
