Overview

Take a trip to Alexandria, also known as the ‘Pearl of the Mediterranean’ and see the ancient monuments of the city.

As you enter the city through the grand gates, you will feel the air which is still heavy with the valour and glory of the reign of Alexander the Great. And if you remember that this ancient city of Egypt is also famous for the stormy relationship between Cleopatra and Mark Anthony, you will feel privileged to be there. Take a trip to the famous Pompey’s Pillar, the tallest ancient monument of Alexandria and the Catacomb of Kom Al Shukafa which is the largest Roman cemetery with a unique blend of Pharaonic and Roman art. This famed city of ancient Egypt is sure to charm you!

Itinerary

In the morning, you will be picked up in an air-conditioned vehicle from your hotel in Cairo. Accompanied by a guide, you will be taken to the city of Alexandria, about 3 hours drive from Cairo. Alexandria has the largest port and is the second city of Egypt. It is internationally known as the ‘Bride of the Mediterranean’.

Your first stop in Alexandria will the Pompey’s Pillar. It is a 28 metre high pillar and dates from the third century. The pillar was raised in honour of Emperor Diocletian, who saved the city of Alexandria from famine.

Continue to the Catacomb of Kom Al Shukafa which is the largest Roman cemetery and consists of three levels cut in the rock to a depth of 100 feet, dating back to the turn of the second century. It is a blend of Pharaonic and Roman art.

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch, proceed to the National Museum of Alexandria. It houses a range of artefacts represented in statues, marble pillars and a collection of coins dating from the Greco Roman era, in addition to a collection of Christian artefacts.

After panning through a range of antiques in the museum, you will be dropped back to your hotel in Cairo.
