Overview

Pack your spirit of adventure and join a fascinating expedition to the Perito Moreno Glacier.

Three miles wide and towering some 180 feet above water level, Perito Moreno is one of the largest glaciers in the Southern Patagonian ice-field and a mind-blowing spectacle.

Enjoy stunning views of the great glacier’s south face from the Port of Bajo Sombras and catch a different perspective from boardwalks in Los Glaciares National Park.

Don crampons and walk over the glacier surface, a thrilling experience known as ‘minitrekking’. See the astonishingly beautiful ice formations – caves, crevasses and small lagoons.

At the end of your exciting walk you will be given a glass of whiskey with ice from the glacier!

Itinerary

For your Mini-Trekking at the Perito Moreno Glacier adventure you will be picked up at your hotel in El Calafate at around 8:00am.

You will drive to Puerto Bajo de las Sombras (Port Under the Shadows) where you can see spectacular views of Glacier Perito Moreno. You will then take a 5-mile drive to the Los Glaciares National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and stop at a viewing point.

Next, you will enjoy a 40-minute walk across the Brazo Rico (Rico Arm) to the glacier. Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the largest of the 356 glaciers in the Southern Patagonian ice-field. The front is about 3 miles (5km) wide and the height of the glacial wall above the water is around 60 meters – with much more of it under water. Your Minitrekking experience will take you onto the surface of the Perito Moreno. On arrival at the glacier, you will be fitted with crampons (special metal spikes worn on boots for traction) and given instruction on how to walk on the ice.

Then the adventure really begins, with a thrilling 2-hour walk across the glacier surface. On the way you will see fascinating ice formations typical of an ice-field, such as crevasses, small lagoons, and craters. The guide will also tell you about the flora, fauna and geology of the region.

At the end of the walk, adventurers will be offered a glass of whiskey with ice from the glacier. You will return by a road running through a forest of lenga trees. Crossing the Brazo Rico again, you will arrive back at the viewing point in front of the glacier.

At the end of the tour you will be driven back to your hotel in El Calafate.
