Overview

Experience the wild side of the Algarve. This tour begins with an exciting Jeep safari off the beaten track where you encounter unexpected examples of wild flora and fauna before you venture on to uncover the variety of animals at Lagos Zoo.

Gasp in awe as the Jeep Safari takes you off to some of the most alluring places in the Algarve – but not by roads you’ll find marked on any map! Follow dirt tracks and wonder at ancient customs still in practice today. Breathe the pure mountain air, rich with the scents of local herbs and plants. Take in the scent of the eucalyptus trees and learn the secrets of harvesting the ubiquitous cork trees.

Visit Parque da Mina, a delightful theme park where you will explore the mysteries of a mansion dating back to the beginning of the 18th Century still equipped with original furniture! Be astounded by the abundance of things to see at this attraction, from an old copper and iron mine to a renovated old farm, home to more than 100 types of birds. Youngsters can play with the ponies and giggle with the goats before you go on to discover the recreated distillery of “Medronho” the local brew.

Your tour continues to the outstanding Lagos Zoo, home to more than 120 species of animals and 200 botanical species. Lagos Zoo focuses on conservation and education to offer you a fun day out for the whole family. Take advantage of the reasonably priced restaurant just outside the grounds.

Undoubtedly one of the main attractions is the primates, but the zoo is also home to lemurs, wallabies, lynxes, reptiles and tropical birds to name but a few! The petting zoo is also a firm favourite with children and adults alike.

The animal enclosures have been designed for the specific needs of each individual species and great care is taken to ensure the well being of all the animals housed at the zoo. The zoo’s philosophy is based around the principles of conserving, education and protecting.

There is information on hand for those wanting to learn more about each species and, during peak season, keepers offer talks during feeding times and are happy to answer visitors’ questions.

If you and your family are also in need of some light refreshments, Lagos Zoo has 2 snack bars to choose from within the grounds and the rustic, very reasonably priced Restaurant Cangalho just outside.

There are also 2 playgrounds for the kids to monkey around in.
