Itinerary

To join this full-day Oxford and Stonehenge Tour from London you should make your way to one of the advertized meeting points (the Guoman Cumberland Hotel, Central Park Hotel or the Radisson Edwardian Vanderbilt Hotel).

Accompanied by your German-speaking guide, you will set off in your comfortable coach for the drive to Stonehenge in the county of Wiltshire. On the way you will enjoy delightful views of the English countryside with its fields, farms hedgerows and woods. As you approach Stonehenge, you will see the magnificent monument standing up proudly from the great expanse of Salisbury Plain.

One of the world’s most famous prehistoric monuments, Stonehenge consists of earthworks surrounding a circle of huge standing stones. Around it are hundreds of other prehistoric sites including burial mounds. The stone circle and its surroundings were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.

Experts still debate the age of the great stone circle and the purpose for which it was built. Erected between 3,000 BC and 1,600 BC, a number of the stones were carried hundreds of miles over land and sea, while antlers and bones were used to dig the pits that hold the stones.

Many mysteries surround the structure. How were the massive stones, many weighing several tons, transported to the site and levered into place without the benefit of wheels and pulleys?

You can follow a circular tour around the site with your guide who can tell you the facts, theories and myths related to the monument.

In the afternoon, you will travel through the beautiful countryside of the Cotswolds to the famous university city of Oxford, home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. Here you will make a stop for lunch (payable direct).

For over 800 years, Oxford has been a haven for kings and scholars. Enjoy the atmosphere of this historic city with its golden stone buildings, elegant spires, peaceful side streets and ancient colleges.
