This wonderful four-day tour takes you into an area of Britain noted for its timelessness and variety. Here you will find great prehistoric ruins such as Stonehenge, evidence of England’s fascinating history, picturesque fishing villages and elegant seaside resorts. It is here that you will see the great apple orchards of Somerset, the patchwork countryside of Devon and the rugged cliff-top coastlines of Cornwall. It is also the land of Celtic legend and of King Arthur and his round table.

Itinerary

Day 1: Dorset

Departing London, we drive south-west through Hampshire and the ancient kingdom of Wessex to its capital Winchester, where we see Arthur’s Round Table in the medieval hall and then its nearby spectacular cathedral as we take a stroll through the city. From here we cross the amazing Salisbury Plain, littered with ancient burial sites and the remains of Iron Age hill forts, to the great prehistoric temple of Stonehenge. Then on through the scenic counties of Somerset and Dorset, littered with lovely thatched cottages onto our traditional accommodation for a welcome meal. Day 2: Devon

Today we explore the lovely, timeless county of Dorsetshire. This is real back-roads country where time has stood still amidst the villages and harbours of the region. Jane Austen's Lyme Regis is one of the highlights of our day. Surrounded by beautiful coastlines and countryside, the area has now been awarded World Heritage Site Status, famous for its geology and fossil finds. We follow the Dorset coast, high above Chesil Beach, to the quaint town of Dorchester and its Thomas Hardy connections passing the Cerne Abbas Giant on the chalk hillside as we meander towards Devon. Day 3: Devon / Cornwall

Today’s itinerary is packed with a range of memorable sights and experiences. We cross the beautiful and awesome landscape of the Dartmoor National Park, en route to the north Cornwall coast. Here we visit Tintagel Castle, the reputed birthplace of King Arthur. The castle sits on top of the wild cliffs and is accessible only by walking. Later we visit one or two Cornish fishing villages for a famed “Cornish Pasty” before returning to our accommodation for a delicious evening meal. Day 4: Somerset

As we head westward, our first highlight of the day is the mystical town of Glastonbury and its Abbey, the reputed site of Arthur and Guinevere’s burial and the “new age” capital of England with its esoteric collection of shops. We have an opportunity to visit the great cathedral city of Wells, where you may enjoy a coffee or admire its attractive cathedral. We drive back towards London partly by the old coaching road through Marlborough, where Merlin is reputed to be buried, past by the mysterious Celtic-built Silbury Hill, on our way to another highlight, the World Heritage site of prehistoric Avebury, one of Europe's largest prehistoric stone circles. Then we will return to London.
