The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah offers a rugged and varied landscape, and activities for the enthusiast that range from shopping and sightseeing to camel riding and waterskiing. As the emirate is situated on the northern end of the UAE, the name Ras Al Khaimah which translates as ‘top of the tent’, is geographically accurate and poetically apt.
The capital city of the emirate also called Ras Al Khaimah is divided into two parts by a creek. The Western part or the Old city houses the museum and has some picturesque buildings. The eastern and newer part of town is the administrative and commercial hub. The Manar Mall has over 120 stores and commercial establishment and boasts a multiplex with six cinema halls. Mangroves flourish in the area around the city of Ras Al Khaimah and along the coast teem with birds and sea life.
Outside the city, the diverse countryside of the emirate embraces a large fertile agricultural area, and mountains that rise up to the height of over 2,000 metres. The scenic wadis of Buh, Ghayl, Shawka are great for trekking and hiking activities. The desert, west of the fertile Digada, has impressive red dunes, and is speckled with camel camps and pretty oasis such as Shamal.
Waterskiing at Khuzam and camel riding at Al Sawan provide their own charm. The Tower Links golf course is a draw for enthusiasts.
You can relish the ‘top of the tent’ feeling as you trek in the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah or merely relax as you sightsee and shop in the capital city.
