The Central Antolian region, located in the center of Turkey, is the second largest region in the country after the Eastern Anatolia Region.
The major city of this region is Ankara, the capital of Turkey. Visitors can see the Anitkabir (Mausoleum), constructed for Ataturk. Also worth seeing is the Ankara Citadel, rising on top of a hill and dominating the skyline of the city. A must visit is Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, one of the richest museums in Turkey. The museum is located next to the citadel and dispalys artifacts from the various civilizations in Anatolia ranging from the Stone Age (50,000 B.C., Middle Paleolithic Period), till the Roman Period (second century A.D.)
The Temple of Augustus, in the Ulus District is another attraction that is worth visiting. Constructed in the second century A.D., it has on its walls a written inventory of all the deeds accomplished by the Roman Emperor Augustus. The baths, theater and Column of Julian are among the other remains of the Roman Period.
No visit to Ankara can be complete without seeing its beautiful mosques. Visit the Aslanhane Mosque constructed in the thirteenth century. The mosque is famous for its turquoise tiled mihrab (niche).
The city is also famous for its monuments such as the Republic Monument in the Ulus District, the Victory Monument in the Yenisehir District and the Hatti Monument at the Sihhiye Square.
Another city worth visiting is Cappadocia. The must see in Cappadocia include Fairy Chimneys, Göreme Valley National Park and rock churches.
