Sound and light show at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds combining Maori culture and live drama. Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds as part of your holiday in New Zealand. Kena Alexander, the director of Culture North will be your guide. It was in these historical grounds that the Treaty of Waitangi – New Zealand’s founding document was signed. The treaty was an agreement between the Maori chiefs and the British and was signed in 1840. The Treaty Grounds were gifted to the nation in 1932 by Lord and Lady Bledisloe. Visit the historic Treaty House where the document was actually signed and get insights from your guide about the value and importance of the document to New Zealand’s history. The grounds are also home to a carved Maori Meeting House and sprawling grounds. See some beautiful native bird life, heritage trees and wonderful bay views from the grounds.
