Find out about the history and culture of Vietnam as you explore tribal villages and historical sites during this family holiday in Son La. Begin your journey towards the Lao border past Hoa Binh and Moc Chau to Son La. Hoa Binh province is situated at a height of 700 metres in the mountainous region south of Hanoi in north central Vietnam. You’ll come across several minority villages here. Visit the Tay village to meet the colourful Tay tribe and learn about their festivals, language, traditional literature and lore. Proceed to Son La and admire the panoramic beauty of its landscape, its mountains covered with patches of vegetation, quaint villages laced with fruit orchards and rice fields... Look out for displays of jewellery, crafts and colourful garments of tribal people at a small ethnographic museum in the old warden’s building. Next morning, journey west through Tuan Giao to Dien Bien Phu, a battle site in which the French were defeated bringing an end to the colonial era. Don’t miss a visit to the Bunker of de Castries, where the headquarter of a French commander has been recreated with old tanks and artillery pieces. You will feel a sense of detachment from the world at Dien Bien Phu, as it is a remote part of Vietnam in the Muong Thanh Valley and is surrounded by steep heavily forested hills. In the morning, continue your journey to Sa Pa. Explore the hill station of Sa Pa which nestles in a valley surrounded by the Fansipan Mountain. You’ll meet Hmong and Dzao, the largest and most colourful ethnic tribes in the region. Visit the Thac Bac Waterfall that cascades 100 metres down to palm-fringed pools. It is best viewed in the rainy season! Take a hiking excursion to the 1900 metres high Tram Ton Pass on the north of Fansipan Mountain and enjoy the magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. It is the highest mountain pass in Vietnam. After a full day exploring Sa Pa and its pretty ethnic villages, return to Hanoi. With picturesque landscapes, interesting historical remains and quaint tribal villages, this is one family holiday in Vietnam you must take!
