Mark Twain said, "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together". Varanasi is one of the holiest sites of Hinduism as it is believed that a dip in the river Ganges here can absolve you of all your sins. The holy chants and prayers, the resounding temple bells and the wafting smell of incense gives the city a unique ambience. Sarnath, which lies close to Varanasi, is where Gautam Buddha delivered his first sermon making the place sacred for Buddhists. The temples of Khajuraho are famous for their erotic carvings. Built between 950 A.D. and 1050 A.D. by the Chandela Rajputs who ruled over this region then, the temples are dedicated to various Gods and Goddesses of the Hindu pantheon and are exquisite examples of Chandela art and architecture.
