|
Trivandrum, now called Thiruvananthapuram, is the capital of Kerala and located at the south-western tip of India. It is bound by the Arabian Sea on the west and the state of Tamil Nadu on the east. The wooded highlands in the eastern and north-eastern borders give it some enchanting picnic spots and a long and beautiful shoreline. Internationally renowned beaches, historic monuments, backwater stretches and a rich cultural heritage make this district a much sought-after tourist destination. Thiruvananthapuram literally means 'the abode of Anantha', the snake God. Hindu God Vishnu is said to rest on this huge serpent. The main attraction of the city, not surprisingly then, is the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Dedicated to Vishnu (also known as Padmanabha) reclining on the snake Anantha, the imposing gopuram (gateway tower) and intricate sculptures of the temple make it a very popular tourist attraction.
