This trekking excursion is a wonderful introduction to the great paramo (Andean moorlands), lagoons and volcanoes of the Northern Highlands in Ecuador. Be enthralled by mysterious crater lakes like the Cuicocha Lake inside the crater of the towering Cotacachi Volcano. Surrounded by lush green hills, the blue waters of this lake will bewitch you with its beauty. This volcano is the entrance to the Ecological Reserve Cotacachi Cayapas. On the outskirts of the Indian town of Otavalo is the thirty-acre Condor Park, a foundation dedicated to the care and rescue of predatory birds such as hawks, eagles, vultures, owls and the elusive and majestic condors. Built on the ruins of an old Inca temple, the ‘Pukara Alto’ hill will weave its magic around you as you watch these powerful birds of prey swooping down on unsuspecting carrion. Add a dash of local flavour as you visit the handicraft markets of Otavalo and come away with an armful of exquisite souvenirs. Wander amongst friendly ‘otavalenos’ (people from Otavalo) and ‘indigenas’ (indigenous people) and bargain for brightly coloured ponchos, fine textiles, weavings and Indian jewellery.
