Tiwanaku, also called Tiahuanaco, is Bolivia's premiere archaeological site. Easily reached from La Paz, the ruins are the remains of a pre-Inca civilization dating from about 600 BC. It was a major sacred ceremonial centre and the focal point of a culture that was far-reaching in its influence and believed to be more advanced than the Incas in art, pottery, astronomy and mathematics. The greatest architectural achievement of pre-Incan civilization, Tiwanaku is a mystery with virtually nothing known of this ‘lost’ civilization. Stroll around the ruins and visit the famous ‘Puerta del Sol’ or Gateway of the Sun, carved from a single block of stone. See distinctive stone heads on the walls, mysterious stone carvings, stone maps, calendars, high statues, monoliths, open air and semi-underground temples. Some stones weigh up to 150 tons! History and archaeology buffs will treasure this tour to a bygone era.
