Game spotting, boat safaris and off road adventure-welcome to southern Tanzania’s reserves!
| Overview | |
Pack your binoculars, hiking shoes and camera and explore the national parks and game reserves of southern Tanzania. Set out from Dar es Salaam and visit the Mikumi National Park. Surrounded by the Uluguru and the Lumango Mountains, this reserve is home to African wildlife like buffaloes, elephants, zebras, lions, crocodiles and leopards. Drive around the Mkata plains and the Mwanamboga waterhole and spot herds of wildebeest and other animals. Take a day trip to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, located just a few kilometres away. Walk through thick forests to the spectacular Sanje Waterfalls and spot chimpanzees and birds. Visit Tanzania’s second largest park, the 10,300 kilometres Ruaha National Park. This game reserve has a landscape of grasslands, rocky kopjes and lofty mountains. Set out on game safaris in Ruaha and spot lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras and antelopes. This reserve is also known for the largest population of elephants in Africa and a variety of birds. Drive to the 6000 feet high Southern Highlands of Tanzania and visit the tea estates and forests of Mufindi. Get a flavour of Tanzania’s culture and tradition at a local village. Stay at the Mufindi Highland Lodge, admire the beauty of the surrounds and explore the area on horse back or mountain bikes. Further on, visit Tanzania’s largest conservation area, the Selous Game Reserve. This 48,000 square kilometres reserve, also a World Heritage Site, is home to a variety of African wildlife like elephants, rhinos, hippos, buffaloes, kudus, antelopes, zebras, lions, leopards and birds. Take a boat safari down the 250 kilometres long Rufiji River and spot hippos and crocodiles. You could also come across elephants splashing in the water. Explore Tanzania’s wilderness as you visit the remote national parks in the south and spot a variety of African wildlife!
