Excursion to Fatehpur Sikri (Ex-Agra)
See the tomb of the Sufi saint Salim Chisti and the palace of Queen Jodha Bai in Fatehpur Sikri
| Attractions and things to do - Excursion to Fatehpur Sikri (Ex-Agra) | |
Located 40 Kilometres from Agra, Fatehpur Sikri was built by Emperor Akbar in 1569 in honour of the great Saint Sheikh Salim Chisti who blessed Akbar and prophesied the birth of three sons to the heirless Emperor. Akbar used Fatehpur Sikri as his capital for 14 years but the city was later abandoned primarily because of scarcity of water. Visit the remarkably well-preserved, graceful buildings within the 'Ghost City' including the Jama Masjid, the tomb of Salim Chisti, Panch Mahal Palace and other palaces that speak volumes of the grandeur and splendour of the Mughal empire at the height of its power. Don't miss the Bulund Darwaza which is 40 metres high and was built by Akbar to commemorate his victory in the state of Gujarat
